Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these treatments need to be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to starting mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
